It switches power, not every appliance function
A smart plug generally controls the electricity supplied to its socket. It does not automatically press the appliance's own start button or reproduce its settings. Check what the appliance does when ordinary power is restored. A lamp with a retained mechanical switch may behave differently from equipment that returns to standby.
Do not create an unattended-use arrangement that the appliance manufacturer does not permit. A remotely controlled socket does not make an appliance suitable for being left on or restarted without supervision. The intended use of both products has to agree before convenience features become relevant.
Read the supported load type
Check the plug's current and power limits for your local electrical supply and the type of load. A headline maximum is not a universal allowance for every motor, heater or other appliance. Manufacturers may specify separate limits or exclusions for particular loads. Use the exact model's documentation and the appliance's rating information.
If the plug powers more than one item through an arrangement the manufacturer permits, the total still matters. Do not treat each outlet or appliance as if it has an independent copy of the maximum. When the documentation is unclear, ask the manufacturer about the actual load rather than estimating from an unrelated example.
Understand the connection requirements
Check the required home network, app and account. Some features depend on internet access or a particular smart-home system. A product supporting one ecosystem does not automatically integrate with another. If local operation during an internet outage matters, read what continues to work rather than assuming schedules are always stored on the plug.
Consider the physical shape too. A bulky plug may block a neighbouring socket or fit awkwardly behind furniture. Leave it accessible for manual control and follow ventilation instructions. Measure the complete arrangement with the appliance's plug inserted.
Test an ordinary schedule first
Set a simple on-and-off schedule with a suitable appliance while you can observe it. Check the time zone, manual override and behaviour after a power interruption. Confirm whether an energy-monitoring display measures the quantity you expect; switching capability and energy measurement are separate features.
Keep the app account protected and install supported updates as instructed. If the product depends on a cloud service, include that dependence in the purchase decision. A smart plug is useful when it reliably handles a clearly permitted load and a routine you understand, not merely because it can be named in a voice assistant.
