Look beyond maximum temperature
A high maximum is not a reason to use a straightener at that setting. Look instead at its adjustment range and how clearly you can select an appropriate level under the instructions. Some models have one fixed temperature and others several steps. A digital number displays the selected level but is not an independent measurement of every point on a plate.
Check whether your grip accidentally touches the controls. A temperature lock can help prevent that. Read how it is enabled and released. A plate lock is different: it holds the arms together for storage. Both may use a padlock symbol without performing the same task.
Plate width and shape
Wide and narrow plates cover different areas. Which shape is manageable depends on the hair and intended movement. Inspect plate length, the casing around the edges and how the arms close. A photograph from directly above does not always reveal the thickness of the surrounding housing.
A floating plate may be part of the construction, but the term alone does not tell you how the device feels. If possible, try closing a switched-off display model. There should be no need to squeeze unusually hard or twist the arms out of alignment. Do not use a device with damaged plates or casing.
Dry hair or a specifically different system
Do not assume suitability for wet hair because a product mentions moisture or conditioning. Many conventional straighteners are intended for dry hair. A device expressly supporting a different method has its own instructions. Directions for the exact model take precedence over general styling advice.
Consider where the tool rests during use. A heat-resistant surface and adequate clear space matter. Automatic shutdown does not replace switching off and disconnecting after use. Allow the appliance to cool before putting it away, even if a pouch is included in the box.
What remains in the comparison?
Record controls, cable reach, storage space and the type of supplied case. A heat-resistant mat and an ordinary storage pouch perform different functions. For travel, check electrical specifications; a matching plug shape alone is insufficient. Choose against these verifiable properties rather than assuming a coating name guarantees a particular result or freedom from damage.
