Begin with the contents
Lay out the items you actually take, including caps and protective covers. Measure the tallest bottle and longest toothbrush. Capacity in litres does not tell you whether those objects pass through the opening. One broad compartment may be clearer than numerous narrow pockets that cannot hold a standard bottle upright.
Separate items needing to remain dry from components that may still be damp after use. A removable inner pouch can help contain leaks, but check whether it can be cleaned and dried properly. No compartment arrangement replaces a securely closed bottle; inspect caps before packing the bag.
Inspect the inside
See how far the zip opens and whether a cloth can reach the corners. A light lining makes spilled residue visible. Smooth surfaces may wipe clean easily, while seams and zip tapes can still retain moisture. Read the care label rather than assuming a plastic-like lining means machine washing is permitted.
A removable pocket is only convenient if it goes back without awkward fiddling. Check that elastic loops hold bottles without pressing their pumps. Mesh pockets reveal contents but will not contain escaped shampoo. Choose compartments by function rather than simply by how many appear in the photograph.
Hanging or standing
A hanging hook can help where there is little space around a basin. Consider how the filled bag hangs: does the opening remain accessible, and do small objects slide into one corner? The hook needs a suitable support. Do not hang a full bag from an unsuitable tap or loose decorative knob.
For a standing bag, the base matters. A rounded soft design may fall over as soon as you remove a heavy bottle. Test its loading at home before departure. After returning, empty it and let it dry open as directed instead of putting it straight back into the suitcase while filled.
Store electrical grooming appliances only when cooled and as their manuals require. A toiletry bag is neither a heat-resistant holder nor a charging station. Keeping those functions separate leaves it an organised storage space even when you travel with several types of product.
