Begin with the collection you want to read
List where your books come from: a particular shop, your own files or a library service. File format support alone does not settle access because account restrictions and digital rights management can also matter. Check the official instructions for the exact service and reader combination before buying hardware.
For library borrowing, consult your own library's current device guidance. Availability and transfer methods differ by service and region. A feature described for another country is not a promise that your library uses it. If borrowing is the main reason for the purchase, confirm that route first rather than trying to solve it after opening the box.
Match the screen to the material
Ordinary reflowable novels and fixed-layout PDFs create different demands. Adjustable text can make a small reader comfortable for a novel, while a page designed for a larger sheet may require zooming and panning. Try a representative document if the seller provides a demonstration. Do not judge a PDF-heavy workflow only from the display of a short novel page.
Colour can matter for illustrated material, but it does not automatically improve every kind of reading. Compare how the actual pages look and whether the screen size suits them. A larger reader may be more useful at a table while being less convenient to hold one-handed during travel.
Think about controls and carrying
Page-turn buttons, touch controls and grip shape change the experience of holding the device. Check the weight with a cover if you expect to use one. A thin bare device in a shop can feel different once protected in a bag. Include the cover's cost and whether it makes the charging port easy to reach.
Lighting adjustments can help adapt the display to the room, but choose according to your own viewing preference. Check how settings are reached and whether the reader remembers them. If you share the device, account and library management may matter more than a small difference in screen specifications.
Keep the transfer process manageable
Read how purchased and personal books are added, backed up where permitted and removed. A system that requires a computer may be acceptable at home but inconvenient if you only use a phone. Check the supported charging and data cable, especially when transferring files by USB.
Before choosing, trace one ordinary book from its source to the reader. If that path is clear and the page is comfortable to use, the purchase has a stronger basis than a comparison of storage numbers alone. Hundreds of unused gigabytes do not help when the books you want cannot reach the device.
