What ends the programme?
With timed drying, you select how long the appliance operates. A sensor programme instead assesses progress towards a chosen dryness level. These are different control methods. A timer is straightforward, but the selected duration alone cannot establish how much moisture will remain in the clothes at the end.
Sensor drying is useful when ordinary loads enter the drum with varying moisture levels. Results still depend on the programme, load and fabrics, however. A sensor is not a guarantee that every part of mixed laundry becomes equally dry at the same moment. A thick waistband and a thin shirt do not behave identically.
The load changes the task
Where possible, sort by material and thickness. A small lightweight load may move through the drum differently from a full basket of towels. Check instructions for minimum and maximum quantities and for drying individual items. An additional timed setting may have a role when a particular item needs a little more treatment after the main load is finished.
Choose a dryness level according to what happens next. Laundry you intend to iron may need a different setting from towels going directly into storage. The instructions may explain cupboard-dry and iron-dry options for each programme. Read those explanations instead of treating the names as precise moisture measurements that apply to every fabric.
If the result is disappointing
First check that filters are clean and the load matches the programme. Sensor surfaces may require maintenance as described in the manual. Use only the specified cleaning method. Simply selecting a much longer time without considering the cause can conceal the problem and expose some items to unnecessary additional drying.
When buying, understand both types of control. Can you choose a sensor programme, adjust the dryness target and use a short supplementary timed cycle if necessary? Clear controls make those choices apparent. Judge whether your usual laundry falls comfortably within the described programmes rather than counting the number of automatic names on the display.
