Reading cordless-vacuum runtime claims

Compare the test mode and attachment before treating runtime figures as equivalent.

A maximum comes with conditions

A runtime claim usually has conditions attached. The lowest power mode, a particular tool and a new fully charged battery may all be part of the measurement. Find the footnote behind the number. Sixty minutes with an unpowered attachment is not the same job as sixty minutes cleaning carpet with a motorised floorhead.

For two shortlisted cleaners, record more than the maximum figure: note the mode used to obtain it. If information for your likely setting is missing, ask for it. A short boost mode may be intended for isolated patches of debris. It does not necessarily need to last for an entire home, but its limitations should be clear before purchase.

Time your cleaning route

With your current routine, measure how long the motor actually runs. Moving chairs and picking up toys do not always consume battery time. Include stairs, upholstery and awkward corners if you normally clean them during the same session. That creates a more useful requirement than a guess based purely on floor area.

A spare battery can extend a session, but establish whether the battery is genuinely user-swappable. Check the price of the correct replacement, its charging arrangement and whether it can be stored separately. Two batteries that must take turns on one charger require different planning from a system with two available charging positions.

Compare a session with an interruption

Suppose you clean downstairs, then the stairs, and return to the sofa later. Establish whether the cleaner merely rests between jobs or can actually recharge. A short pause does not automatically provide enough additional runtime for the next task. Use the charging information and check whether the battery must cool before charging begins.

In a shared household, handover matters too. If someone stores the appliance empty after a small job, the next person does not start with the advertised full battery. A clear charging indicator and consistent parking location can then be more useful than a slightly higher maximum under ideal conditions.

Between cleaning sessions

Charging time can matter more than the headline maximum when you clean several times during a day. Ask whether the charger is integrated into a fixed dock. Check whether the indicator estimates remaining minutes or merely displays a few bars. A time estimate may change as soon as the motor starts working harder.

Leave some margin above your ordinary session length. This does not justify subtracting an arbitrary percentage from every manufacturer's claim; conditions differ too much for that shortcut. Instead, record the actual uncertainty, such as frequent boost use or extensive carpet. Choose a credible fit with your routine rather than the biggest minute count without its accompanying explanation.
