What do you need to reach?
Start with the task the stool will support. Opening a kitchen cupboard differs from prolonged overhead work. Compare platform height rather than only advertised working height, which may assume a particular user's height and reach. You should be able to perform the task without standing on tiptoe or reaching sideways.
Examine the location where it will stand. All feet need appropriate firm, level support. A narrow passage or piece of furniture may prevent full opening. An ordinary household stool is not a solution for different levels on a staircase unless expressly designed for that application.
Steps and support
Broad treads and a clear platform can make foot placement easier to judge. Establish which surfaces are actually intended for standing; a tool tray or upper rail is not automatically a step. Inspect the handhold and whether it is reachable while climbing up and down.
Read the maximum load, including anything you carry. Check the locking arrangement and that the stool can open fully as instructed. Non-slip feet must be intact and appropriate for the surface. A damaged or rocking stool needs attention rather than improvised blocks beneath its legs. Follow the maker's inspection guidance before use.
Moving and storing it
Weight matters when you frequently carry the stool between rooms. Measure its folded thickness and height as well. A model that fits behind a cupboard but requires extensive furniture movement to retrieve is less convenient. Store it so it cannot unexpectedly fall or invite children to climb on it.
Notice hinges and pinch points during folding. Learn where to hold it without putting fingers between moving components. A carrying handle is useful when part of the design, but does not replace proper locking during use. Consider whether the folded stool can be carried through doorways without striking surrounding furniture.
Recognise the limits
Follow the instructions and stay within the stated intended use. Climb down before repositioning the stool instead of stretching farther. A prolonged, heavy or awkwardly placed task may require different access equipment or assistance. Choose the construction around the actual job; simply buying a taller version does not make every situation suitable.
