From the street to the final position
An appliance can fit its intended location without being easy to bring inside. Walk the full route: entrance, hallway, lift or stairs, corners and the room doorway. Record narrow points and obstacles. Include fixed handrails, projecting handles and a ceiling that drops above a staircase.
Use packaged dimensions if delivery is made with the packaging in place. These may exceed product dimensions. The supplier may also specify where and by whom unpacking is permitted. Do not assume delivery staff will remove a box or dismantle an appliance on arrival.
An opening has several dimensions
Measure the clear opening with the door open, not merely the distance between outside frame edges. The door leaf and handle may occupy usable space. Check height and width. A threshold affects tilting, while the area immediately behind the doorway may be needed for turning.
For a lift, internal dimensions and the door opening are separate checks. Consider the permitted load using information from the building manager and delivery service. An item that appears to fit diagonally is not automatically safe to transport that way. Some appliances have orientation requirements and instructions for use after transport.
Corners cannot simply be added up
Two corridors individually wide enough may still form an awkward right-angle turn. A long package needs turning space. Draw the route to scale using the largest packaged dimensions or make a simple cardboard floor plan. This is preparation, not a guarantee that a heavy object can actually be manoeuvred through it.
Discuss tight access with the delivery service beforehand and provide measured clearances. Photographs can explain the surroundings but do not replace dimensions. Mention stairs, unavailable lift access and other relevant details. Check the service actually being ordered: threshold delivery and delivery to a room are different arrangements.
Prepare the final location
Check ventilation and maintenance clearances alongside external dimensions. Doors, drawers and reservoirs need room to move. A cabinet that fits the appliance precisely may be unsuitable when its instructions require free space. Connections must remain accessible in an approved position without pinching cables or hoses.
Clear the route and keep children and pets away from the movement area. Remove only objects you can safely move yourself. Do not improvise ramps or undertake heavy lifting beyond your ability. Delivery should be possible within the agreed conditions rather than depending on an unplanned workaround.
Keep a measurement record
Retain one sheet with product dimensions, packaged dimensions, narrow points and the confirmed delivery arrangement. Recheck measurements if selecting another version. A small model-name change may mean a different box. This preparation lets you ask specific questions before payment rather than making the front door the first serious measuring exercise.
