Preparing a new household appliance for first use

Check placement, transport protection and model-specific startup steps before switching on.

Identify what is in front of you

Compare the appliance code with the order and obtain the correct manual. Check supplied components against its list. A family photograph on the box may show more accessories than your version includes. Keep small pieces in one designated place so they do not disappear with packaging during preparation.

Inspect for visible damage before connecting anything. A damaged cord, broken housing or unexplained leak is not a reason to try a quick test. Stop and contact the seller or support provider. Keep a record of what you found and the condition in which it arrived.

Prepare its location

Check required space during operation. An appliance may need ventilation clearance or room for an open lid, drawer or reservoir. It should stand securely on a suitable surface. Cables and hoses must not become pinched when the product is pushed back into position.

For appliances requiring installation, prescribed connections and any professional work come before startup. A plug physically fitting a socket does not make the whole installation suitable. Follow installation directions rather than improvising around a missing provision. A convenient position is not enough if the instructions prohibit it.

Identify transport protection

Find which films, tapes, blocks or transport components must be removed. Do not remove everything that appears loose or temporary; some labels and parts belong permanently on the appliance. Keep specified transport components in an identifiable place for future movement.

A washing machine may have particular transit restraints, while another appliance may require a waiting period or orientation after transport. Do not transfer those procedures from a different product. Preparation depends on the exact model and the way it has been moved.

Clean, fill or configure

Initial preparation may involve washing detachable food-contact parts, a rinse programme, an empty cycle or another specified procedure. Use only the parts and materials named in the instructions. An electrical base does not belong in washing-up water because its separate jug is washable.

Check settings affecting later use, such as language, water hardness or a clock, where present. A default value does not necessarily suit your circumstances. Record changes so they can be found again. Avoid configuring many extra functions at once before understanding basic operation.

Observe the first use

Stay within the prescribed first-use process and notice whether indicators, water flow and moving parts behave as described. An unfamiliar sound or smell is not automatically a defect, but a general internet reassurance does not replace model information. Consult troubleshooting or support when unsure.

Save the manual digitally with the model reference and proof of purchase. Note later maintenance tasks without inventing a universal schedule. Initial preparation should establish what normal operation looks like and where to find the correct directions once the first impressions have been forgotten.
