Open without losing information
Unpack calmly where small components remain visible. Check the box against the ordered version and notice how the contents are arranged. A photograph before removal can help replace protective pieces later. Avoid cutting deeply along an edge when you do not know what sits immediately behind it.
Keep the manual, cables, fixings and loose accessories together. Compare them with the contents list for the exact order. An empty recess in foam does not automatically indicate a missing item; packaging may serve several versions. The list and order record therefore matter more than an assumption based on shape.
Keep protection during checks
Retain fitted corners and internal packaging while carrying out initial checks. They may help if the product needs transport back to a seller or service provider. That is a practical reason to keep them temporarily, not a blanket statement that every return without the original box is impossible. Check the applicable conditions with the seller.
Keep packaging away from children and walking routes. Store large boxes neatly where possible without destroying supportive inserts. Do not keep damp or dirty material against a new product. Preserve useful labels, but avoid leaving personal information exposed when packaging is eventually discarded.
Organise the order details
Save the confirmation, invoice and relevant product code together. Record receipt date and the check that revealed any problem. Describe specifically what is missing or not working; a photograph of the connection or damage may explain more than a general complaint.
If a problem arises, contact the relevant seller and follow instructions for the next step. Do not independently send an item to an address appearing only on old packaging. Return and service procedures differ. Proof of purchase is, for example, part of IKEA's return information, but each seller has its own process.
When to discard the box
Once appropriate checks are complete and you know what future transport requires, decide which packaging to retain. Keep model details, manual and proof of purchase accessible. Before recycling, check small bags and folded base sections again. Discovering a missing accessory after the box has gone is an avoidable inconvenience.
