Decide what you want to see
A large ordinary mirror provides an overall view, while a magnifying surface enlarges a smaller area. These are different functions. Strong magnification can help with a detail but may be less convenient for seeing the whole face at once. Check whether the product has one magnifying surface or combines a normal view with an enlarged one.
Viewing distance belongs in that decision. A magnifying mirror often requires moving closer to obtain a usable image. If possible, test whether that distance suits the place where you sit or stand. A mirror deep behind a basin can consequently be less useful than a smaller one positioned nearer to you.
Adjust height and angle
Measure eye level at the actual location. A low tabletop mirror can encourage bending, while an adjustable wall arm can bring the image towards you. Check the arm's reach and space needed to fold it away. A rotating model should not strike taps, cupboards or the wall.
For a freestanding version, stability and available surface area matter. A tray in the base can hold small objects but should not obstruct the controls. For wall mounting, consider the complete product's weight and appropriate wall fixings. Follow sunlight-related placement instructions as well; do not leave a magnifying mirror carelessly in direct sunlight.
Light around the image
Look at whether illumination falls evenly on the face or mainly creates a bright rim in the mirror. The LED count on the box does not fully describe that. Dimming can help in an already bright room. Check that the lowest setting and controls are easy to find without repeatedly changing the mirror angle.
Some mirrors provide different light colours. These may help you inspect under varied conditions, but no mode guarantees an exact match with every other room. For an overall check, also use the lighting in which you will actually spend time later.
Power and maintenance
Establish whether the mirror needs batteries, a rechargeable cell or mains power. With a rechargeable design, check whether it works while charging and where its cable runs. Automatic shutdown can stop the light but is not the same thing as a physical master switch.
Read how to clean the glass and surrounding frame. Do not spray liquid into connections or control openings. A replaceable small magnifying insert presents a different service question from an integrated lighting module. Include those components in the comparison before choosing solely by a high magnification number.
