Measure the insert first
If you are replacing a cover, find the duvet's actual width and length on its label. If the label is missing, measure it laid out without stretching. A bed's mattress size does not establish the size of the duvet currently used on it. The cover needs to suit the insert, not merely share a bed-size name with the mattress.
Product names such as double, king or extra long can vary between markets and retailers. Keep the numerical dimensions beside you while shopping. Confirm whether the listing describes the duvet cover itself or the complete set, and check pillowcase sizes separately.
Consider the opening and closure
A cover can have the right dimensions yet be awkward to put on. Compare the opening width, fastening method and any internal corner ties. Small buttons, zips and envelope closures feel different in regular use. Check whether the closure sits where it could bother you and whether it can be washed as instructed without special handling.
If the duvet has attachment loops, confirm that any ties in the cover align usefully. Do not assume all systems match. An oversized cover can allow the insert to shift, while a tight one can bunch it. Choose the manufacturer's recommended fit rather than deliberately adding unexplained extra centimetres.
Check the rest of the bed
When buying a new duvet as well, consider how much coverage you want on each side and whether two sleepers pull it in different directions. More width means more fabric to wash and store. A generous overhang can look appealing but should still suit the bed height and the surrounding floor space.
Read care information for both pieces. The cover may need a different treatment from the filling. Check any stated shrinkage guidance and follow the washing instructions before deciding that a new cover is incorrectly sized. Keep the packaging until the dimensions and set contents have been checked within the seller's return conditions. A short note of the duvet and pillow sizes in your household can prevent the same confusion at the next bedding purchase.
